Vanuatu Adventure Holiday Guide

River rafting, kayaking, waterfalls and other adventures

An adventure holiday means different things to different people. For many these days it is the thought of spending one's vacation being involved with extreme sports or similar adventurous thrill-seeking activities. For others it follows the traditional meaning of doing something out of the ordinary - going where one has not been before and meeting new experiences head on. Visit Vanuatu for a memorable voyage of discovery.

  • Learn of the ancient traditions of different Melanesian cultures
  • Look down into the Yasur volcano on the island of Tanna
  • Go scuba diving, especially good around the island of Santo
  • Wreck diving includes the SS President Coolidge, and the MV Henry Bonneaud
  • Go on a river trip in the rainforest jungles
  • Hike to magnificent waterfalls in the rainforest
  • Experience the thrill of sport and game fishing for the big fish!
  • Visit the locations for Survivor Vanuatu off Efate
  • Witness the incredible feats of local tribesmen on Pentecost (in April and May), as they dive from a 35 metre high bamboo tower with vines tied to their ankles.
  • Take a cruise and visit Ambrym Island to view the glow of Mt Marum and Mt Benbow, two active volcanoes.
  • Go to Maewo Island for bird watching adventures.
The exotic Melanesian culture found in Vanuatu varies from island to island so there is a whole range of exciting adventurous discoveries to be made. The ni-Vanuatu people follow ancient traditional customs, or 'kastom', much of which is secret and passed down through the generations. Western influences only began in the last few hundred years of a culture dating back 5000 years, when the original descendants migrated to the islands of Vanuatu from Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands in the north. Without the ease of inter-island travel, cultural traditions on the various islands have developed independent of each other, meaning that today the traveller can witness diverse and interesting customs.
